“It’s really nice to have a pretty face to look at when I’m working,” I say to Hannah. “I’m used to my brother’s ugly mug.”

She glances up from the reports she’s reading and gives me a quizzical look, like she didn’t quite make out what I said.

“I said, ‘It’s really nice to—'”

“Yeah, I heard you,” she snaps back.

“Uh, sorry…I didn’t mean to offend you. I was trying to give you a compliment. Sure beats looking at my brother Russ all day.” I run my fingers across my chin where the hair is finally starting to grow back. I shaved for my interview a couple days ago, but now I’m letting it grow back in. Hannah claims Patsy doesn’t really care what I look like. The only way I was getting away with it at Friday’s Formalwear is because my dad hasn’t been there to give me shit about it.

“Jason…” She looks up from the lines and lines of figures again.

“Yes?” I have a feeling I’m just talking to myself at this point. She’s completely engrossed in those numbers.

“Something here isn’t adding up.” She points to a few figures and gives me a confused look.

“I need some context. What am I looking at?” I take the spreadsheet from her and peer down, trying to make sense of it.

“These are the deposits over here. These are the expenses over here. These lines are for employee salaries. What do you notice?”

“There are twelve lines?” My eyebrows arch as I count them again to make sure.

“Yes. And how many employees do we actually have?”

“Uh…nine?”

“Yes, but actually only eight because you’re not really on the books.” Her lips purse. “There are fake employees on this report. Look at these ID numbers…they are too similar to be different people.”

“What in the world? You’re right!” I study the salary amounts. “And this guy is paid even more than you are, almost as much as Patsy is making.”

Her eyes widen. “Let me look up the code on the system.” She turns to the computer at the consultation counter and taps in a series of numbers, her long nails flying over the keys.

A record shows up for someone named Eric Wilson. Under title it says “Assistant Store Manager.”

“Holy shit!” I exclaim, then realize I need to lower my volume about a zillion decibels. “She made him up! There’s no Assistant Store Manager!”

“If there were,” Hannah huffs, “it would be me! This guy is completely fake.”

“And Patsy is pocketing the money, I bet. How in the world is she getting away with this?”

Hannah takes in a deep breath then blows it back out in a long huff. Her eyes are narrowed, nails drumming against the counter. “Because it’s a huge company, and no one knows what the hell is going on. They’re not doing internal audits. No wonder she doesn’t want someone from corporate to come down here.”

“What are we going to do about it?” I glance around the store to see if anyone is looking. There’s a couple looking
